Chinese New Year Day After Dinner: Dai Wah Yummy City
The day after Chinese New Year is also important. You spend it with your blood family. For my sister, that means spending it with us. We went out to eat again. This time we went local in Brooklyn because my dad found a great deal: for 10 people, you get a 9 course meal for around $300. We arrive at the restaurant and we were greeted by a whole roasted suckling pig. It's crispy and delicious. These are made ahead of time because it takes hours to cook.
Once everyone arrives, they take the pig away and chop it up into pieces for the table. The meat is soft and savory. It's delicious. The skin is super crisp and lovely. I can just eat this on and on.
Next up, some honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp is battered and deep fried. Then it's overed in kewpie mayo. This is a popular dish. The shrimp is really large and delicious. It's not overcooked at all. The walnuts are sweet from the honey. And traditionally, it's served with broccoli. At this place, they went easy with the mayo which is the way I prefer it. Sometimes, they glop it on which I hate. And sometimes, they give you a bowl of mayo. Whatever you fancy.
And here are some golden fried tofu squares with a shrimp stuffed on top. Along with this dish came some stir fried conch, squid, and scallops along with sugar snap peas.
And the soup again. This time, it's all seafood and some fish stomach. I definitely did not like this at all. It was texturally unappealing without much flavor. Bland almost.
And here's the chicken. This wasn't as good as the chicken from Northern Manor. The meat wasn't as good and the shrimp chips tasted slightly old.
Ah, the lobster. This was overcooked. The meat was lacking. This was kinda of skimpy. We needed larger lobsters.
The vegetable dish with shitake mushrooms and bok choy.
And a very popular dish: fried flounder. I didn't get a chance to take a picture before the waiter filleted it for us. The meat is tender and the skin is crispy. The fish is fried so much than you can eat the fins. I liked this.
And now the fillers: fried rice. I didn't try this but I heard that it wasn't very good.
And the lo mein. I didn't try this either but I also heard that this was just okay.
We've never had dinner here before. We only order lunch or some dim sum sometimes. The dinner food here was just okay. The roasted suckling pig was the best of the dishes. The service was lacking a little bit as most of the waiters were concentrating on a rowdy group of coworkers celebrating with several bottles of red wine. Also, the atmosphere could be better. It's a small local place so decor and ambiance isn't really high on their priority list. Dai Wah Yummy City 7218 18th Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11204 (718) 837-8818
