Sushi Zen

There are a ton of sushi places in Midtown. Some are better than others. Of course, you have your generic deli's that sell pre-made sushi. I'm fine with that when I feel like having sub-par sushi. But sometimes, I want something nicer. So when a business lunch comes around, I like to take advantage of having to pick the restaurant. Well, not too much advantage (ahem, Le Bernardin!). So this time, I chose Sushi Zen. For a business lunch, I was shy to whip out the camera. I found out at the end of the lunch that my new soon-to-be manager was totally cool with it and would've encouraged it. Darn! Next time. So I'll just have to describe our meal to you. We both opted for the Special Prix Fixe Lunch ($34) that offered 4 courses. We pretty much had very similar choices. We both started with the miso soup. It was just okay. Nothing great but wasn't dishwater either. It was nice and warmed me up quite nicely. Next, we both had the beef negimi. It's a thin slice of beef wrapped around a scallion, then grilled. I think it came with 3 long pieces and a side of marinated bean sprouts. For our main courses, I opted for the mixed sushi. I had all the usual: tuna, salmon, roe, eel, etc. The fish was fresh but not the freshest I've had. I enjoyed it just fine. He opted for the rolls which looked like a better choice. They gave him 3 rolls! That's a lot of sushi for lunch. But he ate it all up. The rolls weren't any special rolls. I think they were california, tuna, and salmon. Maybe spicy tuna, I'm not sure. And to finish the meal, we both had ice cream. I chose red bean and he chose green tea. The red bean was quite nice and much better than I've had at other places. He said the green tea was good too. Personally, I like green tea but hate green tea flavored things. In the end, I would describe this place as slightly better than average. It's definitely better than your generic deli sushi but not as good as Yasuda. But as compared to another average place, like Haru, I like it slightly better. Oh and the decor is quite nice, if you're into that. Sushi Zen 108 West 44th Street New York, NY 10036-4011 (212) 302-0707 sushizen-ny.com
