Some of Mr. Meat & Potatoes relatives were visiting from Hong Kong. So we decided to take them out to dinner one night in the city. They wanted Italian so we picked Becco. It's close to the apartment and they're good for large groups.
We started off with some Caesar salad. Nicely dressed romaine lettuce. It was cheesey, creamy, and the lettuce remained crunchy. This salad comes with every entree.
The appetizers came out. We ordered the fried mozzarella in carozza. However, this came out instead: Mozzarella Lavorata In Casa ($12). It was fresh mozzarella and ripe tomatoes. It was lightly dressed with oil, herbs, and salt. It was actually quite refreshing. And in the end, the better choice because lots of food was still coming.
We also ordered fried calamari ($21). These were really nice. They were slightly breaded and fried perfectly. Crispy and not chewy at all. I enjoyed these very much. Some people were a little intimidated by the tentacles. But I like the different textures of them. So more for me.
And now the entrees. We had the fish special: Pesce Intero Del Giorno ($32). The fish of the day was orata. It's a white fish similar in taste to tilapia. It was roasted and served with seasonal veggies. I enjoyed this. It was light and perfect for a summer dinner.
We also ordered the Pollo Al Limone ($20) which is lemon chicken. Again, a nice light dish. The chicken was a little dry but the sauce was good. Lemony, salty and briny from the olives and capers.
And the star of the show: Osso Buco ($30). A huge braised veal shank over some faro. The meat just fell right off the bone. It was super flavorful and delicious. This could easily feed 2-3 people. And of course, I took a spoon and dug some of the marrow out. Some people were kind of freaked out. But not me. It's natural fatty goodness. Yum!
And here was the pasta special of the day ($23). They had farfalle with marinara, escarole ravioli, and linguine with clams. I like the linguine with clams the best. In fact, I only took seconds of that. The garlic and wine sauce was lovely. And I can eat a lot of clams. These were quite big and plump. I had others get more pasta just so that I could pick the clams off their plates.
The meal was decent and I enjoyed it very much. However, they handled our large party (14) very well. Everything went smoothly and food came out on time and hot. Becco is not always my first choice. But it doesn't disappoint either. Becco 355 West 46th Street New York, NY 10036-3810 (212) 397-7597 becco-nyc.com
