EN Japanese Brasserie

I haven't seen Doc Nut in a long while. So with my Groupon, we had dinner at EN Japanese Brasserie. I've heard lots of good things about this place but haven't had the pleasure of going until now. We arrived on time for our reservation and was quickly escorted to our table. The decor is beautiful. It's a fairly large space with lots of different rooms and tables. I loved it. And onto the food. We started off with some edamame ($9). They were grilled and salted. They had a really nice smoky flavor to them. Pricey but yummy. Next, some Uni Tomago Tofu ($8) which was a delicate egg custard in dashi with sea urchin. It was delicious. This was so soft and the uni was so fresh. I would definitely get this again. I, of course, ordered the Freshly Made Tofu ($9). I had it served warm. It came in a wooden box and was scoop for yourself. It was delicious. Smooth, sleek, wonderfully delicious. It was tofu at its finest. The soy was grandfully pronounced in all its glory. I could just eat a whole bowl of this with a side of warm rice. On the special's menu: Yellotail Collar ($17) with head attached. The fish was grilled and lightly salted. The meat was sweet and savory. Deliciously fresh and fantastic. You have to dig a little into the nooks and crannies for all the meat. But the work was worth it. She ordered the Blue Cram Miso Soup ($6). The soup was nice. The crab added a sweet, ocean flavor and the miso was nutty and thick. I ordered the Uni Don ($25) which was fresh urchin, roe, and seaweed over rice. This was delicious. The uni was fresh as can be and they gave a really nice portion. The roe popped in my mouth with it's salty, briny flavor. The seaweed gave everything a nice salty touch. I mixed things together into my rice and it was great. And lastly, she ordered a tofu avocado roll ($14). I never had tofu in sushi before but it was soft and nice. But the flavor was overpowered by everything else. I could hardly taste it against the seaweed and avocado. I don't think I would order this again but the idea was cute. The meal here was absolutely fantastic. I haven't had a meal where the restaurant impressed me this much in a very long time. I loved it and would definitely recommend it to anyone else. I will definitely come back here again. Oh and the Groupon made it oh so much nicer. EN Japanese Brasserie 435 Hudson St New York, NY 10014 (212) 647-9196 enjb.com
