For one of the few times that I don't bring lunch, I make the most of it. I scour the internet for food trucks that I haven't tried yet and make sure to walk over to scope it out. I've had my eye on Korilla BBQ for a while now. I know they've received many good reviews which has led to long lines. Getting some food when they first appeared on the scene seemed impossible. However, my long wait was rewarded. On this day, I walk up to the truck and only saw a short line. Yes! That doesn't mean they're not still popular though. As I stood there to decide what I wanted, more people formed a line behind me. A friendly, fun, and hard working staff was working. And while I ordered, their efficiency to get food to customer was very impressive. I appreciated that. They kept the line moving and their hungry customers happy.
The Korilla BBQ truck mixes Korean food and flavors with Mexican. I think the idea is wonderful. Korean food is high impact flavor and spices and Mexican food has mastered the art of "travel food" with tacos, burritos, etc.
For my first try, I ordered 3 tacos for $7. That's good value right from the start. For my protein, I picked beef bulgogi, pulled pork, and chicken thighs (so much more happy with thighs than breast). Then you get to pick your choice of kimchi and vegetables. I told the guy to do whatever he thought best. He gave me a very good variety of kimchi, daikon, pickled cabbage, pickled cucumber, etc. The last step is sauce but I refrained from that. I don't like saucy tacos and prefer them without. But I hear the sauces are killer and if you like spicy things, go for it.
The first thing I noticed about the 3 tacos is the double tortilla wrap which I very much appreciated. It helped with eating. The second thing I noticed were the large portions. These were not dainty tacos. They weren't not humongous either but definitely a good size. And the flavor? Wow, the flavor. You get spicy, sour, sweet, and savory all in one bite. All of the meat was tender and full of Korean flavors while the vegetables balanced out the fattiness. The tortilla mellowed everything out to the right note. These tacos were very well balanced in flavor and texture. Which did I enjoy best? The beef. But honestly, I liked having the variety of meat. I would not hesitate to get this again. Oh and I want to remind you that it was only $7. They can easily charge $10 and I would happily pay for it.

the bulgogi burrito with kimchi fried rice and korilla sauce is so good! Maybe my favorite burrito ever.
ReplyDeleteSKIMPY! SMALL! At least the burritos are. I've banned them from my rotation.
ReplyDeleteGee, wonder who this is...
DeleteThey only rarely seem to come to my part of Midtown, and when they do it's accompanied by a long line. Based on your writeup, I'll keep trying!
I seriously LOVE THIS TRUCK! I rarely eat there because of the insane lines, but the food is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYet to try the original so hopefully in the near future.
ReplyDeleteWas not impressed by Truck 2 in the past but that was when the original was competing.
