My Trip to Melbourne, Australia (Day 3): Shakespeare Under the Stars

Later that night, we attended Shakespeare Under the Stars with a comedic rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Set in the Royal Botanical Gardens this was a beautiful spot for an outdoor play. It wasn't very crowded but that was just perfect since it felt intimate as the actors walked through interacting with us. Oh and the best thing? They rent out lawn chairs for $5 each. Our backs were saved.

Food and drink as a picnic was suggested so we brought our bounty from Queen Victoria Market. As you can see below, our spread was quite impressive. So much so that one of the actors commented on it as part of the act. It was hilarious.
Of the sliced meats, we had ham (the best sliced meat being sweet and salty at the same time, tender, nice cured pork flavor), spicy soppressata (wasn't spicy but good marbling of fat), coppa (a little dry but paired well with the creamy cheeses), smoke salmon (amazingly rich and smokey, my favorite), octopus salad (well cooked and tender; not rubbery; nice tangy vinaigrette), mixed olives (too salty from brine), fresh grapes (extremely sweet; perfect pairing with salty meats), sliced focaccia (herbaceous, salty, soft; good vehicle for meats and cheeses), brie (soft, goeey, creamy), smoked gouda (creamy, rich, strong smoke flavor), and blue cheese (ripe, funky, slightly bitter, creamy). All this cost about $50 but we obviously didn't eat all of it. In fact, it lasted 3 days. Luckily we had a refrigerator in the hotel room and so the leftovers made good breakfast and snacks for the next couple days.

This was such a low key night but we really loved being a part of the local scene and just relaxing with a fun show. I would absolutely do this again with lots of food in tow.
