Shake Shack: Times Square

Just another day and another Shake Shack moment. This time, Mr. Haribo Mule was visiting and I helped him pop his Shack cherry. It was glorious.

La Silhouette [CLOSED]

I am pleased to present another birthday post to my readers. Oh yes, there are still more to come. Haha! Are you beginning to think I'm spoiled now? Hardly. I celebrate the birthdays of each and every person that celebrates with me.

My friend Mr. Portobello and I keep in touch over email but hardly see each other even though we live in the same city and work fairly close to each other. However, as tradition goes, we meet up twice a year: once for my birthday and once for his. It's funny how that works and we don't miss a beat. So this year, I decided to keep it local and picked the new neighborhood restaurant, La Silhouette. This French restaurant exuded the finesse of fine dining but with a more casual feel.

Lunch Week 10: Ginger Scallion Noodles with Vegetable Dumplings

So every Sunday, I head over to the kitchen to whip up a big batch of food for lunch next week. Yes, I brown bag. And I almost always do it, unless I become too busy to even buy cold cuts from the deli. I do it for several reasons being health, finance, and laziness. Now, you may think that spending hours on a day off to prep and cook five meals at once is hardly lazy. But let me remind you, I hate it when the time comes to decide what to eat for lunch every day. I work in Midtown so the choices are endless. My problem, the more choices, the harder it is for me. So it's much easier for me to have my lunch ready and already decided.

So my lunch for the week: Ginger Scallion Noodles with Vegetable Dumplings
Trying to think of vegetarian lunches can be difficult sometimes. Salads are too easy and boring to fall back on so a game plan must always be made. The fun part is playing around with different cuisines. This week, I'm doing Chinese. Ginger scallion noodles has always been a staple in my house growing up. It's ridiculously simple to make and very cost effective. However, I can't just survive on noodles. Okay, I can but it's not going to be enough variety to keep me happy through Friday. So I added a soy sauce egg and some dumplings.

Tuesday Nights: Eight Mile Creek

Towards the end of the last year, my friends thought that we weren't hanging out enough. It's true, we weren't. So they started Tuesday night get-togethers. Every Tuesday, we'll pick a bar to drink, eat, and hang out for a couple of hours. Whoever can make it will attend. If you're busy, it's okay. There's always next week. So this is Tuesday Nights on Tasty Eating where you will find bars that serve food and how we like them.

On this recent Tuesday Night, we headed out to: Eight Mile Creek
The first week back from vacation was kind of rough. I had delayed jet lag and the daylight saving time really messed up my sleep schedule. But I couldn't say no to a Tuesday Night outing with my friends. Besides, I wanted to show them my tan before it started to fade away.

To celebrate my return, my friends picked Eight Mile Creek which is an Australian Bar with an outdoor patio in the back. Perfect for the warm weather we've been having. Happy hour lasts from 5-7pm which was a little too short for us but we dealt with it as usual.
*Sorry about the upcoming blurry pics.*

The Manor

For my birthday (yeah another birthday post), my dear sister took me out to The Manor in West Orange, NJ. It's mainly an event space mostly used for weddings. However, they also do nightly buffet dinners. On the weekend they also offer lobster buffet dinners. That's right! All you can eat lobster and other delectables for $48 per person. Drinks, as usual, are extra.

This buffet is not a casual affair. Guys wear button down shirts and slacks. And girls...well, they never have a dress code for females but I wore a dress. We walk in to be greeted by a hostess. After a short wait, we were escorted to our table to be greeted by 2 waiters. Our main waiter has been working there for over a decade. The second in command was younger and peppier. We ordered our drinks and went on our merry way.

The way I eat at a buffet is by scanning the entire spread first. That way, I know how to plan my attack. After a walk around the room, I started with the raw seafood table. Oysters were freshly shucked and replenished constantly. I went and picked out the larger ones. The shrimp cocktail looked good as well. Then some smoked salmon, smoke haddock, deviled egg with smoke salmon, and fish baked in a crust.

Take Out: Daisy May's

Every so often, I get a hankering for some barbecue. I'm lucky to live withing walking distance from Daisy May's for some take out. And if you don't, not to worry. They offer delivery to the entire island of Manhattan. That's pretty good.

To our benefit as a walk in customer, we get to indulge in the barbecue plate specials which is one meat with 2 sides. We always pick the half rack of Kansas City Sweet and Sticky Ribs plate special ($21.50). The ribs on their own is $16. But now we get 2 small sides for free which normally run $5 each. Macaroni and cheese is usually procured and is a repeat for us today. However, this time I wanted to try something new so I picked the corn bread as the second side. Although this was enough food for 2 people, I wanted the Barbecue Chicken Sandwich ($10) as well. I was really hungry and wanted a little more variety.

Hallo Berlin

After dinner at Danji, we went to look for some dessert and a place to drink. Although I had another bar in mind, Hallo Berlin quickly won the vote because it was closer and they served boots of beer.

Danji

My birthday posts keep rolling in. What can I say? I have a lot of friends. Haha! Joking aside, I love all my friends and thank each and every one of them for making me feel so very special. On this night, I picked Danji, a Korean restaurant with tapas-like sized dishes focusing on traditional and modern techniques. I've heard very good things about this place and have been wanting to go for a very long time.

Cooking: Udon

I've been getting a little more creative with my soupy noodles lately. I haven't reached the point of making my own mother broth but I do make my own stock which I use as the base of my noodles. The udon comes prepacked and just a quick boil in salted water does the trick. I like to rinse them off with cold water to get rid of some of the starch but that's personal. I don't believe ramen shops do that.

For this udon meal, I went all out with the topping. Below you can see the seared duck  breast, chopped scallions, sauteed spinach with garlic, shitake mushrooms, and sauteed bean sprouts with sesame oil. In the middle is a perfectly cooked soft boiled egg. How beautiful does that look?

Lunch Week 9: Roasted Butternut Squash Pasta

So every Sunday, I head over to the kitchen to whip up a big batch of food for lunch next week. Yes, I brown bag. So my lunch for the week: Roasted Butternut Squash Pasta
Switching it up with some pasta this week.  I didn't want to make anything really heavy so lasagna was out of the question. So I made a pasta salad instead with roasted butternut squash, mozzarella cheese, spring mix, and dried cherries.

Tuesday Nights: The Mason Jar

Towards the end of the last year, my friends thought that we weren't hanging out enough. It's true, we weren't. So they started Tuesday night get-togethers. Every Tuesday, we'll pick a bar to drink, eat, and hang out for a couple of hours. Whoever can make it will attend. If you're busy, it's okay. There's always next week. So this is Tuesday Nights on Tasty Eating where you will find bars that serve food and how we like them.

On this recent Tuesday Night, we headed out to: The Mason Jar
Before I left for vacation, I went for one last Tuesday HH to say so long to my friends over some food, drinks, and Linsanity updates. I'm not much into basketball so the latter didn't mean much to me. However, the hoopla did make for an interesting night of live acoustics and unusual crowdedness on a Tuesday night.

ABC Kitchen

As some of you know already, I go out with different sets of friends for my birthday. Yeah, I could just have one big party but it's not my fault that they can't all get along. Anyway, it also allows me to go to a bunch of different places to celebrate. I really love the variety. So every year, I have a birthday dinner with Doc Nut and this year was no different. After considering a lot of places, I finally decided on ABC Kitchen. This restaurant was started by Jean Georges and Phil Suarez. They focused on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. It led to an ever changing menu in an eclectic space.

Happy Birthday, Tasty Eating Blog!

You're 3 years old now. So much has changed since the beginning. However, I'm so happy that I've started you for the many reasons that affected my life that year. Each year has had its challenges but one thing remains the same: all the delicious food that I come across and write about.

Thank you to all of my family, friends, and readers who have become part of my life in one way or another. I wouldn't be who I am and this blog wouldn't be what it is without you all.

Cheers!

Cooking: Pancakes

Pancakes are one of those things that I haven't been able to do well. They're usually very flat and dense. I want fluffy, light, and golden brown. I've been trying out a couple of recipes and taking tips from people. This is the latest recipe from Tasting Table looked really good to me. I also noted that the recipe is from Blue Ribbon which enticed me some more.

Sik Gaek

As I mentioned earlier, my birthday was awhile ago and I love to celebrate it. It's an excuse to go out to eat delicious food with friends and family. Okay, so I do that on a normal basis. But for birthdays, I tend to pick nicer restaurants or places best visited as a group. So when the Feisty Foodie asked me where I would like to celebrate my birthday, I immediately answered Sik Gaek. I've been eyeing their seafood hot pot for a long time now and this would work out beautifully. She graciously organized the whole shebang and I found myself in Queens one night to enjoy some food with my FBM friends.

Take Out: Two Boots

Pizza delivery again. And also from Two Boots again. This time we didn't go for a specialty pie. We wanted a more normal pie just to test it out. However, instead of a cheese pie we opted for pepperoni and mushrooms (~$23).

Ferry House

I found myself in Princeton, NJ for lunch one day and wanted to treat my in laws and family to something special. Also, I had a coupon that needed to be used. I have always wanted to go the Ferry House because I've heard very good things about it. It's normally recommended as a dinner destination but I only had time for lunch.

Social Eatz [CLOSED]

A few coworkers and I went out for dinner and some drinks one night. I was in charge of picking a place. We all wanted to keep the price low so I looked around and suggested Social Eatz. It's a trendy environment with fusion comfort food. Besides, my ulterior motive of tasting the "best burger in America" was driving my suggestion.

15 East

Every year, Mr. M&P takes me out for my birthday. I have full reign over which place I would like to go. And the parameters that I give myself are:
1. It has to be a new place for the both of us.
2. It has to be a place that I think we would both enjoy.

With that in mind, I picked 15 East for sushi. I was having a huge sushi craving lately. One that wouldn't be sated with our neighborhood restaurants. No, I was craving very high quality sushi. The kind that breaks the bank.

Minetta Tavern

My birthday passed a while ago but I'm only coming to the posts now. What can I say? I eat a lot. Anyway, every year, I like to treat myself for lunch on my actual birthday. Normally, I do fine dining but I've had a lot of that in the past (lucky me!) and was looking for something different this year. Minetta Tavern popped into my head. I haven't had a chance to taste their acclaimed burger. So many people claim that it's the best burger they've ever had. Woah! That's a big statement there buddy. So I went to go try it out myself. Oh and with the Feisty Foodie and TC in tow.

Big Gay Ice Cream Shop

TC and I weren't completely satisfied with our dinner at Ramen Kuboya so we hit up the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop on the way back to the subway. I've had their delectables from the truck but this would be TC's first time. Like I mentioned in the previous post, it was a pretty chilly night. But that didn't prevent people from eating ice cream. The place was pretty full when we arrived. Luckily, most people opted to eat and walk. We stayed and ate at the one lonely bar table in the corner.

Ramen Kuboya

Okay, so clearly I was trying to use up a bunch of coupons that I have purchased. I have definitely slowed down on buying them. I just don't like feeling pressured to use them before they expire. Anyway, one of the last coupons I have was to Ramen Kuboya. I like ramen so why not try a new place? With TC in tow, we went and tried it out. He's my coupon partner in crime.

Spot Dessert Bar

After Whitmans one night, TC and I went to get dessert. We invited the Feisty Foodie and her guest to come along too. We walked along St. Marks Place and easily spotted the bright orange sign hanging out in front. We walked in and there was a huge line. I guess everyone else was thinking the same thing: we all needed to redeem our coupons before they expired. We waited and waited but things seemed to move quickly. Most people ate their dessert and left shortly after. No one really lingered. All of our patience was rewarded with a large table in the back. Enough to seat 6 people but we spread out on it ourselves. Ah, nice and comfy.

Landmark Tavern

Landmark Tavern hasn't disappointed me. The staff is friendly and the food is better than most pubs. So Mr. M&P and I went one day to enjoy some dinner. Surprisingly, the bar was packed. Normally, there are some people but this was really full. So we opted to sit in the back room which was quite and better suited for eating.

Whitmans

I first about Whitmans when talk about the juicy lucy burger came up. It's a cheese stuffed burger that originated in Minneapolis. The cheese becomes molten when cooked and the burger is infused with melted goodness. So when I had the opportunity to go to Whitmans to try it out, I sure knew to bring my friend TC with me. Mmm, burgers.

John Brown Smokehouse

Recently, I've been doing a lot of traveling for food. Not out of the city or state this time. But out of the borough of Manhattan. Some of the best food can be found in the outer boroughs. And I'm happy that more and more places are willing to open up in obscure places. If your food is good, then people will travel for it. Case in point: John Brown Smokehouse.

La Maison du Chocolat
