Clarke's Standard

An unexpected fire truck emergency blocking in our car dashed our dinner plans one day. So instead, we walked around the Union Square area looking for something to eat. We stumbled upon Clarke's Standard and decided to give it a try. Burgers, fries, fast, cheap, and delicious? Maybe.

The burgers are cooked to order and doesn't take much time. I ordered the PJ Clarke's Double Junior Cheeseburger ($7.60) that comes with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and standard sauce. I ordered it medium which is the standard there. Unfortunately, my patties were so thin that it was difficult for them to maintain the medium doneness to the meat. I felt that it was a bit overcooked. Otherwise, the meat had a bit of beefy flavor with the creamy melted cheese on top. The bun was soft and squishy and held up through the last bite.
Mr. M&P had the Cadillac ($7.85) which is a burger with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and standard sauce. He forgot to say no to the tomatoes. Those were quickly plucked off. He ordered it medium rare and it was cooked to medium. He was happy that it wasn't overcooked. The thicker patty really helped here.
Overall, I was underwhelmed with my experience at Clarke's Standard. The burgers themselves were just okay. Oh and the fries were meh as well. They needed a bit more time in the fryer for a more browned color. They were so blond and needed a bit more crispness to them. Everything wasn't worth raving about. In a pinch, I would go back but certainly not destination worthy.

  2. And yet, at the original (54th/Lex), I've had consistently well-made burgers. The tots (RIP, sadly) were fantastic, but I've been fine with the fries - not cheese fries, as the cheese glops up very quickly.
